Depression is a mental health condition that we now know can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, or skin colour. However, research has shown that men are less likely to seek help for depression and are at a higher risk of suicide. Recent statistics on depression according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) confirm that over 6 million men in the United States alone have been diagnosed with depression and other mental health conditions. However, men are less likely to be diagnosed with depression than women, and they are more likely to die by suicide. In fact, suicide is the seventh leading cause of death among men in the US and some Asia countries like India and Japan, and men have a higher chance of committing suicide, up to four times more than women.

  • Medication: Medical breakthroughs have provided antidepressant medications which regulate chemical reactions and actions in the brain to alleviate symptoms of depression.
